Moana System
Helping fishers and scientists understand our changing seas
The Moana TD Sensor and the Moana Deck Unit have been installed on hundreds of commercial fishing vessels around the world, from small in-shore day boats to deep water factory trawlers.
The Moana TD Sensor is a tough robust accurate sensor that can be quickly and easily attached to a wide range of commercial fishing gear. Once fitted, the sensor operates automatically, recording high accuracy temperature and depth data throughout the fishing event. When the fishing gear surfaces, the data is automatically offloaded wirelessly to the Moana Deck Unit that is mounted on the vessel.
The Moana Deck Unit processes the data and then uploads it to the cloud. The system is fully automatic and so does not interfere with the fishing operation.
Moana TD Sensor
Built to Capture Reliable Ocean Data on Every Deployment
The Moana TD Sensor is a small, rugged, accurate temperature and depth sensor that has been designed and engineered, to survive the tough operating conditions associated with commercial fishing.
The sensor continuously monitors its surrounding environment, automatically compensating for changes in barometric pressure to accurately detect the start of each fishing event without any operator input. This ensures reliable data capture from the moment the gear enters the water.
Throughout the fishing event, the Moana TD Sensor automatically switches sampling strategy between depth change triggered profiling and time series mode. A passive wave filter limits excessive depth change triggered data accumulation in shallow water.
When the fishing gear is lifted from the water, the Moana TD automatically transfers the recorded data wirelessly to the Moana Deck Unit.
Moana sensors are available with 200m, 1000m and 2000m operating depths. Temperature accuracy is +/- 0.05DegC, with 0.001DegC resolution. Battery endurance and service interval is 2 years
Moana Deck Unit
Seamless Wireless Data Transfer from Vessel to the Cloud
The solar-powered Moana Deck Unit automatically offloads data wirelessly from Moana TD Sensors when they surface.
The data is automatically post-processed by the Moana Deck Unit, with every temperature and depth measurement Geo-positioned using the Deck Units archived position data. This creates a complete spatial record of data from each fishing event.
The Moana Deck Unit uploads the data over cellular or Wi-Fi networks.
Designed for simplicity, the Moana Deck Unit is quick and easy to install on almost any commercial fishing vessel. Once mounted the system operates entirely automatically, continuously receiving, processing, and uploading data in the background without disrupting normal fishing operations.
Options are available for externally powered and GPS fed Deck Units for operating inside vessels, such as moon pools.
The ZebraTech Deck Unit is field proven and operating on many hundreds of fishing vessels all around the world, from the Southern Ocean to the tropics, to the Bering Sea.

Moana TD mounting hardware
ZebraTech has developed a comprehensive range of purpose-built mounting hardware to securely attach and protect the Moana TD Sensor across a wide variety of commercial fishing gear.
Designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the marine environment, these mounting solutions ensure reliable sensor performance while minimising the risk of damage during normal fishing operations. Mounting options are available for a range of fishing methods.
Moana Dashboard
Powerful Fleet Monitoring for Sensor Network Management
Managing Moana TD sensor fleets has been simplified by the ZebraTech Dashboard. The Dashboard provides the fleet manager with sophisticated sensor network monitoring tools, featuring distribution and equipment performance visualizations and alerts.

Specialised Moana sensors
A range of sensors that integrate seamlessly with the Moana system
In addition to the Moana TD, we offer the Moana Sink Rate, Moana Tilt, and Moana Dive profiler sensors.
The Moana Sink Rate sensor collects long line sink rate data. It features an activation clip that triggers the data collection process as the long line leaves the deck.
The Moana Sink Rate sensor is a valuable tool for vital sea bird entanglement avoidance monitoring and studies. ZebraTech has a comprehensive mobile app available that visualizes the Sink Rate data for fishers, developed in association with the New Zealand Department of Conservation.
The Moana Tilt Sensor records the sensor angle. Attached to trawl nets, the Moana Tilt Sensor has been used worldwide for trawl net bottom contact studies.
The Moana Dive Profiler is a rugged depth only logger for attachment to nets. The data enables the performance of the net to be monitored and optimized to maximize fishing efficiency. A complete working system with visualizations is available from Gannet nets
Moana around the world
Fishing Vessel Ocean Observing Network (FVON)
Fishing vessels are becoming increasingly recognized as a vital method to collect subsurface cost effective scientific data from coastal and shelf regions around the world.
The Fishing Vessel Ocean Observing Network (FVON) is the international coordinating body dedicated to the advancement of ocean observing in partnership with the fishing sector.
ZebraTech provides technical and logistical support to the New Zealand AMOS Moana sensor FVON network, that generates freely available scientific subsurface data from fishing vessels operating all around New Zealand.
